Hadley 3D technology helps create Shakespeare sculpture

While the reconstructed Globe Theatre on London’s Southbank allows audiences to enjoy Shakespeare’s plays in a period setting, tourists visiting the Bard’s birthplace can now marvel at a complex spherical sculpture, created with the help of Hadley Group’s laser cutting technology. Located on the site of Shakespeare’s family home in Chapel Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, ‘The Terrestrial Sphere’ was sculpted by Ben Ryan and Rupert Todd of Ursae Ltd using Hadley Allied Products’ 5-axis laser. It forms a striking element to an artwork trail created by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to mark the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death.

Ursae’s skills are widely respected within the luxury goods market while its supply chain includes many international companies. Although in the past it had often encountered delays and bureaucracy from dealing with such behemoths, its first experience of Hadley Group’s service was all positive.

Ben Ryan of Ursae Ltd explained the challenges of the project, commenting: “At the end of 2015 our company was commissioned to produce a number of sculptures for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. The sculptures were part of a redevelopment of William Shakespeare’s family home on Chapel Street where they lived from 1597 to 1616.”

“One of the sculptures we were commissioned to complete was a terrestrial globe depicting the knowledge of the Elizabethan period, offering an insight into what Shakespeare and his peers believed the world to look like at that point in time. Due to the complexity and detail of the design, we required a specialist in the field of 5-axis cutting to help bring the piece to fruition.”

In particular Ursae Ltd praised not just the responsiveness of Hadley Group’s sales and project management service, but also the skills of its machine programmers and operators; citing the way they dealt with any problems which arose.

Ben Ryan, continued: “When we approached the Hadley Group with our complex cutting file we were immediately encouraged by their enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude to help cut and engrave the challenging details of the design. We had tendered the job to a number of specialist firms, but it was Hadley Group that stood out from the crowd. Not only were they competitive with their fees, they were prompt in responding to our initial inquiry, and they recognised from an early stage the complexity of the task in hand.”

He concluded: “Overall working alongside the Hadley Group has been an extremely productive and insightful experience.”
